🧠 What is Shattering?

A set of points is "shattered" by a classifier if that classifier can perfectly separate EVERY possible way of coloring those points red and blue. If you have 3 points, there are 2³ = 8 different ways to color them!

📏 VC-Dimension

The VC-dimension is the size of the largest set of points that can be shattered. For example:

  • Lines can shatter any 3 points, but not all sets of 4 points → VC-dim = 3
  • Circles can shatter any 3 points → VC-dim = 3
  • Rectangles (axis-aligned) can shatter some sets of 3 points → VC-dim = 3

🎲 Try This

1. Start with 3 points and the line classifier
2. Try to create ALL 8 possible red/blue combinations
3. Can you always draw a line to separate them?
4. Now try with 4 points - much harder!
